One cat. One bigger idea.

First, which cat do we mean?

A 2024 study separates the Clouded Tiger Cat from the earlier Northern Tiger Cat concept. This makes habitat differences easier to see. It also changes which animals an old map or population estimate describes.

A changing conservation unit

A broader historical assessment cannot automatically describe each newly separated taxon.

Habitat change

Different ecological settings need their own conservation interpretation.

Records need context

Names, dates and identification evidence must travel with each record.

How do we know that?

Keep the method
in the picture.

The 2024 study combines occurrence records, ecological modelling and physical comparisons. Its treatment is explained here alongside the older assessment, rather than silently merging them.

Where does Clouded Tiger Cat fit?

ZEW-001 is a separate Taxonomy Watch record, outside the public 40. An older range or risk category must not be applied to the narrower Northern Tiger Cat without review.

What don’t we know?

Which older records can be confidently assigned to the narrower identity? Range, abundance and images all need that alignment.

Geographic context

Narrower treatment: savannas and shrub-woodlands of Brazil, with Guiana Shield context.

This is geographic context, not a mapped distribution. Range polygons require taxon, date and reuse review before publication.
