Zoo-EV was founded with the goal of addressing the “range anxiety” experienced by electric vehicle (EV) drivers, including the founder, who is also a frequent visitor of zoos across the country. Despite the growing popularity of EVs, many zoos still lack charging stations, making it difficult for EV drivers to plan and complete long-distance trips.
To tackle this issue, the company aims to install fast AC destination chargers at AZA-accredited zoos across the country, providing free charging for zoo members and discounted rates for non-member patrons. This not only encourages EV owners to visit zoos, but also helps educate the public about the importance of environmental conservation and wildlife conservation.
Furthermore, the company plans to create a national DC fast charging network, which would be an even greater incentive for EV owners to become zoo members. They would receive free charging at any network location, at any time. For non-members, discounted charging rates would be available for 24 hours after visiting the zoo.
To minimize inconvenience for EV drivers, the company plans to use remote video monitoring and sensors to ensure that charging stations are in good working condition and to alert the operation center of any issues. The company also plans to build relationships with local and state police agencies and tow companies to remove any illegally parked vehicles blocking charging stations.
Despite challenges, such as federal regulations prohibiting the commercialization of federally funded rest areas, the company is determined to make its charging network as accessible and straightforward as possible for the general public, with a simple flat rate and the fastest charge rate possible.
