The Iberian lynx, Lynx pardinus, is a critically endangered wild cat native to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, primarily found in Spain and, to a lesser extent, Portugal. Distinct from other lynx species by its more heavily spotted coat, long ear tufts, and a shorter “beard” of fur around its face, it is a medium-sized feline, beautifully adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Its diet is remarkably specialized, relying almost exclusively on the European rabbit, which constitutes about 80-90% of its food intake. This extreme dietary Specialization makes the Iberian lynx highly vulnerable to fluctuations in rabbit populations. Primarily solitary and crepuscular or nocturnal, it inhabits fragmented patches of Mediterranean forests, scrublands, and open pastures are interspersed with dense vegetation.
The Iberian lynx plays a crucial ecological role as a highly specialized predator within its unique Mediterranean ecosystem. Its strong dependence on the European rabbit means it exerts significant top-down control on rabbit populations, which in turn influences the health and regeneration of native plant communities by preventing overgrazing. The lynx’s presence is a powerful indicator of a healthy and balanced Mediterranean habitat, representing the success of conservation efforts in a highly human-impacted landscape. Its near extinction and subsequent recovery through intensive conservation programs have made it a global symbol of successful wildlife reintroduction and habitat restoration. Protecting the Iberian lynx is therefore vital not only for the survival of this magnificent and unique European feline but also for the preservation of the rich biodiversity and ecological integrity of the fragile Mediterranean ecosystems it inhabits.
Every day, wild cats around the world face threats like habitat loss, poaching, and natural climate progression. But hope isn’t lost. With your support, we can protect these majestic animals and preserve their habitats.
